Designs for an updated Eclipse logo

We are looking at modernizing the Eclipse logo.  I kicked off the process a couple of weeks ago and we received some interesting suggestions.

However, I felt we needed to get more variety and more graphic designers involved, so I started a project on CrowdSpring and offered a $500 bounty.    Good news is now we are getting a lot more designs.

I would like to get feedback and involvement from the Eclipse community.   Unfortunately,  CrowdSpring doesn’t make it easier for comments, so please leave any you have on this Eclipse bug.

February 19 is the deadline for new designs.  After that we will setup a way to select a short list and a final selection.   For those people that like our existing logo, I will be perfectly happy if we stay with the existing logo but I do think we should see if there is something better.   Community feedback now is key.

  1. Initial reactions…
    First, “Goodnight Moon”.
    Second, 70’s muscle car.
    (Sorry about that.)

Visually, the first scan reads “Elipse” or “ELisp” (oops, “ELipse” – mental slip), with a intrusive graphic. (Maybe this is a sneaky way to introduce Lisp as an extension language for Eclipse?)

      1. Wonder if you can enter the purple GTO as an Eclipse logo? Somewhat appropriate. Maybe not…

Don’t know why, but I associate rainbow-chrome with old car advertisements. Probably 70’s issues of “Motor Trends”?

On a slightly more serious note, I kind’a like #10 in Ian’s crowdspring page. Maybe more horizontal space between letters for where wider images make sense.

      2. It is not only the purble. What will somebody think if she or he sees the exiting logo for the first time? Text shadow or blur is just clutter, isn’t it? I’m fine with the existing one because I’m professionally blinkered. Yea, rainbow-chrome reminds on muscle cars.

  2. According to Artemy Lebedev (, one of main design failures is replacing a letter with some picture of something relevant. For instance “Tools” with hammer instead of T. And rainbow looks very gay. Sorry 🙂

  3. Thanks for the comments. It would be really helpful if people would leave comments on the bug, since not everyone reads my blog. 🙂

For clarification, the two designs I posted here were just for display, not necessarily what I was recommending.
