2.27 Million

One of the most frequent questions that I get asked is “How many Eclipse users are there?” Unfortunately, this is not an easy question to answer for an open source community. Well, IDC has just made available a new research report that estimates there to be 2.27 million Eclipse users worldwide. The report also breaks it out by region. Pretty cool!

Great to see IDC conducting this type of research! The full report may be purchased from the IDC web site.

Is it just me or is $500 a bit much for an article?

Another Question: how do you define an ‘eclipse user’?
Is it a developer that uses an IDE based on eclipse or develops applications based on the eclipse framework?
Or is it any user of a RCP based Application? What about JFace/SWT Applications?

Though i love to hear and read about the growth of eclipse, i think its very hard and at least inaccurate to measure it in ‘number of eclipse users’, without defining what an eclipse user acutally is.

    Dominik,

I agree $500 is a bit steep for an article but IDC’s business model is selling their research so I can’t fault them for that.

To clarify, the number is based on developers, ie. people using the IDE not users of Eclipse RCP applications. Although I would love to see that number. ūüôā
