Early Bird Discount for Eclipse World

September 24, 2008

I just noticed that September 26 is the early bird discount for Eclipse World, October 28-30 in reston VA.  Eclipse World is always one of my favorite Eclipse events and I am looking forward to attending this year.  I hope to see you there.

What do IBM, Oracle, SAP, JBoss and Sun Have in Common?

September 16, 2008

According to this announcement, they are all building their next generation Java server technology on OSGi.   If I am not mistaken, basically 95%+ of the Java server market is now based on OSGi.   That is a pretty compelling statement on the importance of OSGi.

Of course Equinox is a pretty important part of this equation as it is the OSGi implementation being used by a number of these vendors.

Help Organize an Eclipse DemoCamp

September 11, 2008

We are running a new series of Eclipse DemoCamps in November.  The DemoCamps have proven to be a very popular way for local Eclipse communities to meet and show-off cool Eclipse technology.  For instance, as pointed out by Jacek, the Poles love their DemoCamps.

Organizing a DemoCamp is pretty easy: 1) find a location, typically a pub/bar or restaurant, 2) add the location information to the DemoCamp wiki, 3) encourage your friends and collaegues to present and/or attend, 4) have fun meeting new people during the DemoCamp.   More details can be found here.

btw, for those local to Ottawa we will be having another DemoCamp in Ottawa.  I am hoping to find a place the last week of November.  Sign-up now if you want to be a presenter.

New Eclipse Training Series

September 9, 2008

We have just announced a new Eclipse Training Series that will run November 3 to December 13.  In the past we have just offered an Introduction to RCP but this time we have expanded the course topics to include an Advanced RCP course, Equinox course and Modeling course (EMF, GMF and GEF).  We have also expanded to offering courses in 32 cities around the world, including for the first time 5 cities in China.

If you are looking to update your Eclipse skills and knowledge, this is a great opportunity to attend an Eclipse training course.  If you register before October 3, this is an extra 5% discount on what are already pretty attractive prices.  To register, select the course and city you want to attend, follow the register link and then follow the instructions.

Of course this is all possible due to the collaboration with our Eclipse members, including ANCIT Consulting, Anyware Technologies, AvantSoft (Eclipse University), Chris Aniszczyk, Gerhardt Informatics, Industrial TSI, Innoopract, itemis, Jeff McAffer, Obeo, The RCP Company, Scott Lewis, Soyatec and WeigleWilczek.

Collaborating on Open Source and Open Standards at Eclipse

September 8, 2008

Eclipse is proving to be a great community and platform for organizations to collaborate on implementing standards.   There are lots of example but today there happened to be two announcements that highlight this theme.

CA and IBM have announced they will be demonstrating support and interoperability for the CMDB Federation standard; a standard for system management data.  How are they providing this support?  CA and IBM are collaborating on a common implementation for the standard in the Eclipse COSMOS project.  By having both companies work together on a common implementation, they get to market faster and have fewer interoperability issues.  Win win for all.

In a completely different industry, automotive, the Standards for Technology in Automotive Retail (STAR) group is providing a standard set of Eclipse based tools to make it easier for the automotive sector to implement the STAR standard.  Another great example of using open source to help drive the adoption of standard.

Feel freee to send me other examples of industry groups using Eclipse as a platform for collaboration.

Genuitec Becomes a Strategic Developer

September 3, 2008

Congratulations to Genuitec on their decision to become a strategic developer member with the Eclipse Foundation.  Genuitec was an early, active and valuable participant in the Eclipse community and their product MyEclipse is very popular with Eclipse users.  Therefore,  it is great to see them become even more involved.
