EPL Now Availabe on Google Code

August 29, 2008

Google has just announced that they are adding the Eclipse Public License (EPL) as a license option for Google Code.  A special thank you to Chris DiBona and the entire Google Code team making this addition.   Google is a good friend of Eclipse and we appreciate their ongoing support of our community.

As Chris mentioned, we at the Foundation had been asking Google to add the EPL but I think more importantly the Eclipse community has been very vocal about wanting the ability to use EPL for their projects on Google Code.  This is a great example of how the voice of a community can make a big difference.

Now, I hope people start using Google Code and EPL to start building some very cool open source technology.

OSGi 4.2 Draft Specs Now Available to Everyone

August 27, 2008

As many people know OSGi is the standard that is implemented in Equinox and is at the heart of Eclipse.  Therefore, I was pleased to see Eric Newcomer’s announcement that a new draft of the OSGi 4.2 specs are available for anyone to download.  Lets hope the OSGi Alliance continues to provide open access to the 4.2 specs.

Aptana Aquires PyDev

August 26, 2008

Congratulations to the PyDev team and Aptana on the recent announcement that Aptana has hired the lead developer of PyDev and aquired the PyDev.   PyDev is a very popular Python Eclipse IDE, so Aptana has done very well to add this to their suite of products.   Lets hope this means more investment in making PyDev an even better Python IDE for Eclipse users.

Eclipse Conference Season

August 21, 2008

As we near the end of summer, conference season seems to be starting and there are a number of Eclipse conferences being organized.

The producers of the successful JAX conferences in Europe are starting a new Java and Eclipse oriented conference in San Jose, called JAX San Jose on Oct. 5-9.   There is some great Eclipse content and an impressive line-up of speakers.   It is nice to see a new Java oriented conference being started on the west coast

Eclipse World is being held October 28-30 in Reston VA.  I always enjoy this conference and am looking forward to attending again this year.  We also plan to co-located the Eclipse members meeting at the same hotel as Eclipse World, so I hope to see a lot of people in Reston.  btw, the deadline for the early bird registration price for Eclipse World is tomorrow August 22.

Of course not to be forgotten is Eclipse Summit Europe in Germany on Nov 19-20.  I will be attending ESE for the very first time, so I am looking forward to this event.  The call for submissions for ESE closes on Sept. 1, so if you have a cool topic that you would like to present, now is the time.  Registration is now open too.

And the winners are…

August 12, 2008

The winners of the Ganymede Around the World blogging contest have been announced.   Congratulation to Vincenzo Cappello of Corbetta, Italy for his review of CDT.  For his efforts he wins a new Eclipse jacket and a pass to EclipseCon or Eclipse Summit Europe.   I particularly like his introduction ‘I [have] never see an IDE like this for Linux.

The other winners were Emiel van Rooijen fromAmsterdam, Netherlands and Kazimierz Pogoda from Szczecin, Poland.

Congratulations to all and thank you to everyone that blogged about Ganymede!
