Last week at the Eclipse Marketing Symposium, I did a presentation on the results we achieved during the Europa launch. The purpose of the presentation was to share with the community the results of the different programs we put in place during the Europa launch.
Measuring the success of a marketing program has always been a ‘black art’ and the advent of podcasts, webinars and blogs make it even more challenging. Therefore, I am hoping if I share our results, others can use it for comparison purposes. I am also interested in hearing the results of others and how they measure their marketing efforts.

The first top on the Eclipse MLP tour is here in Chicago for the Eclipse Marketing Symposium and Eclipse Members’ Meeting. Yesterday we had a very successful Marketing Symposium and today is the Members’ meeting. We will post the presentations over the next couple of days.

The good news for MLP Java is that the Worlds Largest Toy Soldier Sale is also going on at the same hotel.
For the observant reader you will noticed that my MLP Java has changed its look. It seems MLP’s have the ability to change quickly. For instance, take MLP Jonathan, one day he preaches about open source and the next day is selling Window servers. Go figure.

In addition to our PDT 1.0 announcement there were two other Eclipse related announcements that I find very interesting.
1) CodeGear has announced their 3rdRails Ruby IDE. Ruby continues to be a hot language and from the initial feedback, CodeGear has done a great job on their support. btw, I love the name.
2) IBM announced that they are making their office productivity tools, called Lotus Symphony, freely available. Lotus Symphony is based on Eclipse RCP, so I thought it was interesting to see the experience of this Eclipse developer looking at Lotus Symphony. I do wonder why IBM did not actually open source Symphony; that would have been very cool.

The program and registration system is now open for OS Summit Asia. As a reminder this is a conference that Apache and Eclipse are organizing in Hong Kong.
There is a really strong program featuring Eclipse and Apache committers; some Eclipse highlights include:
In addition to lots of other Eclipse committers presenting, Mike Milinkovich and Bjorn Freeman-Benson from the Eclipse Foundation will also be talking.
It should be a great conference, so take the opportunity to register now.

Matt Assay is suggesting Mozilla should be more like Eclipse, specifically in terms of promoting commercial development on top of Firefox.
Well sometimes I wish Eclipse was more like Mozilla.
Things like SpreadFirefox, the scale of Firefox adoption and the revenue Mozilla generates is fantastic. Something I wish we could emulate at Eclipse.
However, I do think the Eclipse community has done a nice job of promoting the commercial adoption of the Eclipse platform and we all benefit from the ecosystem that has been developed. Is this something that could also benefit Mozilla?
IMO, Mozilla, Apache and Eclipse all have slightly different models for building open source communities and I think we can all learn from each other.

We will be closing down the Eclipse Community Survey on Friday, September 7, so if you haven’t taken the time to complete it, now is the time.
Here are 4 good reasons to do so:
- You can help provide feedback to the Eclipse community, so we can improve the services we provide.
- The entire Eclipse community will have access to the results of the survey.
- You could win a Nokia N95 phone and some Eclipse SWAG.
- It will only take 10-15 minutes of your time, so do it now.
Thanks to everyone that has already completed the survey. Last count we had over 720 respondents, so I am looking forward to the results.

After much discussion, debate, a bit of crying and bribery (my favourite parenting technique), I have secured one MLP from my daughters’ collection for the Eclipse MLP Tour. They weren’t thrilled about me taking their entire collection on the road but have agreed to part with one. The conversation went something like the following:
Me: Can I take one of your MLP to work?
Daughter: No
Me: I will buy you a new one.
Daughter: With rainbows and sparkles?
Me: Yes
Daughter: OK, you can have this one. It is a bit old, faded, tired and the hair is also falling out.
Me: What is it’s name?
Daughter: Java
Me: Hmm, I know another MLP that might not like me calling this MLP Java.
Daughter: Why?
Me: This MLP has lots of rules on what can be named Java.
Daughter: What is her name?
Me: Jonathan
Daughter: Well Daddy, my MLP is named Java.
Knowing that I need to pick my battles, I would like to introduce Java, the MLP for the Eclipse MLP Tour. Java is all set with an Eclipse logo and ready to start the tour. The first stop on the tour is the Eclipse Marketing Symposium and Eclipse Members’ Meeting in Chicago
Lets hope I don’t run into the Java naming police. However, in order to ensure compliance I will always refer to Java as jMLP or MLP4J, not MLPJ.
